The face serves as the cornerstone of our national identities. Its significance is magnified when our phones employ it for unlocking, and governments deploy AI to identify individuals from grainy video footage. Much like faces, signatures are unique embodiments of a person, a proof of identity and are designed to be challenging to counterfeit.
The inspiration for these works can be traced back to the 2010s, blending an object upon which another item is meant to be showcased – a resin and fibreglass face used in the fashion industry as a sunglasses mannequin – with a signature. The vectorised, dehumanised, standardised signature, which could be interpreted as a fluid barcode, replaces the eyes of robotic yet gendered faces. Collectively, they are interpretations of our relationship with identities, normalisation and standardisation.
